"Mount Teide is the highest point in the Canaries"

Mount Teide

Mount Teide (pronounced "Tay-deh") is the highest point in the Canaries and higher than anywhere on mainland Spain too at over 12,200 feet. Now classed as a dormant volcano, Teide was formed over 1 million years ago. The volcano last erupted in 1909. The volcano and the land surrounding it comprise the Parque Nacional del Teide. You'll find a unique 'lunar' landscape and incredible views over the island. There are species of flower on Teide unique to Tenerife. There's a cable car to the upper peak - note that this is not suitable for use by those with heart/medical conditions.

We've included a couple of videos on Teide at the foot of this page which we'd encourage you to watch. One is a holiday-makers record of a trip to the Teide park, the other being a video diary of a manual ascent of Mount Teide - who would be bonkers enough to attempt such a thing in April? A Brit, of course.

Snow is present at the top of Mount Teide for four months of the year. The Teide park was awarded 'World Heritage Site' status in 2007, the first World Heritage Site in the Canaries.

Further information on the Teide park is available at their official website.
